Max Perkoff is a native of San Francisco. Jazz formed the core of his bohemian upbringing courtesy of his father, pianist Si Perkoff and mother, visual artist Sara Goren. His artistry on both the trombone and the piano is sometimes heard on the same concert, something he does increasingly often.

Sitting on the lap of drummer Elvin Jones at two, and getting to play his set; hearing his father rehearse in their apartment, during which time the Perkoff family had recently befriended Thelonious & Nellie Monk, and many more early experiences created quite a jazz-life for the young musician-to-be.

Perkoff graduated from Indiana University School of Music in 1985 with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies. Jazz teachers included David Baker, Dominic Spera, & Luke Gillespie. Trombone instruction was with M. Dee Stewart, and piano lessons with Edwuard Auer.

Additional teachers who had a great influence were pianists Barry Harris & Hal Galper, multi-reed artist David Liebman, and trombonists Frank Rehak & Conrad Herwig.

After graduation, he lived and worked in the tri-state area of New York, Connecticut, & New Jersey. Gigs at this time include substituting as lead trombonist for the late great Sonny Costanza; playing piano at the Angry Squire, La Mama Theater, trombone with pop star Johnny Mathis and keyboard with fellow 1960's icon Bobby Rydell. A special highlight was in “the purple grotto” for Al “Jazbo” Collin’s WNEW live jazz radio show with fellow trombonist and I.U. alum Eric Storkman.

In 1989 Max returned to the San Francisco Bay Area. From 1992-’95 he played trombone for the Mike Vax Great American Jazz Band in festivals all over the western United States.

Current performance groups include Skin & Bone, The Max Perkoff Band; Amanda King, The Harold Jones Big Band; Linda Kosut, The Three Dimensions + One, and guest performances with Monk's Music Trio.

Skin & Bone - creative music quartet

MAX PERKOFF, trombonist, pianist, composer, co-leader.
www.maxperkoff.com

"Perkoff is influenced by J.J. Johnson and is a chordal-based bop soloist at heart, but his improvisations are unpredictable and are free of clichés. He held his own with Roswell Rudd in his previous record Monk’s Bones, and he excels with his modern mainstream quartet. "Infinite Search" should result in Max Perkoff becoming better known and rated high among modern jazz trombonists." - Scott Yanow, Los Angeles Jazz Scene

"Max Perkoff favors a fairly straightforward tone; the integrity of his lines is what counts." - Kevin Whitehead, "Fresh Air" on National Public Radio.

IAN DOGOLE, percussionist, composer & co-leader. www.iandogole.com

"The music of Ian Dogole is an especially satisfying blend of jazz chops and compositions with a world music sensibility" - Stuart Kremsky, Cadence Magazine

Ian has engaged audiences throughout the United States with his highly energized percussion skills, musical sensitivity and limitless enthusiasm. Whether performing his original compositions, traditional indigenous music from Africa, Asia or South America, or compositions by Thelonious Monk, Ralph Towner or Bela Bartok, Dogole freely draws from a broad spectrum of musical styles and atmospheres to achieve a profound connection with his listeners. Some of Dogole’s live performance collaborators have included:

* Hamza El Din – ud, tar & voice (world-renowned Nubian master musician)
* Paul McCandless – woodwinds (founding member of the pioneering World Fusion ensemble Oregon)
* Tito La Rosa - Peruvian shaman and multi-instrumentalist
* Alex DeGrassi - Guitarist extraordinaire
* David Friesen - Virtuoso Bassist

SI PERKOFF, pianist & composer. www.siperkoff.com

"Si Perkoff is a pianist's pianist...one senses an immersion in the Monkian realm that is unusually and profoundly deep." - Chuck Berg, Univ. of Kansas

Si was born July 25, 1937, in St. Louis, MO. At the age of seven he started classical piano lessons (1944-51),
and then studied keyboard harmony (jazz) with Hall Overton 1957-58.

Since the early 1960s he has been a performing pianist on the Bay Area Jazz scene, beginning with two years as house pianist at the legendary Bop City. Through the years he has been a leader of combos featuring many of the finest local musicians: Paul Breslin, Frank Passantino, Puzz Firth, Vince Lateano, Tony Johnson, Steve Mitchell, George Marsh, Mel Martin, Gerry Gilmore, Al Molino, Noel Jewkes; and a sideman in groups with national stars of Jazz music: Art Pepper, Buddy Collette, Pepper Adams, Frank Rehak, Julien Priester, Harry Sweets Edison, Roswell Rudd.

SAM BEVAN, acoustic & electric bass, composer. www.sambevan.com

Articulate, focused and highly musical, Bevan's sense of melody and rhythmic thrust showcase his talent.
- Randy McElligot, Jazzreview.com

Since moving to San Francisco in 1999, Sam Bevan has established himself as one of the most versatile and creative bassists in the Bay Area music scene. Bevan is able to canvass a large musical landscape where jazz, funk, r&b, folk, Afro-Cuban, Afro-Venezuelan, and West African disciplines joyously intermingle. His sound is in response to the history of modern jazz, yet his composer's ear distinguishes his overall concept.
